BMW has revealed the all-new 2nd Gen 2 Series Coupe.

BMW has revealed the second-generation 2 Series Coupe ahead of its debut. The new BMW 2 Series Coupe has a polarising design yet it could be mistaken anything other than a BMW.

According to BMW, they wanted the new 2 Series to echo the fundamentals of the original BMW 02 introduced way back in 1966.

BMW says that the new 2 Series Coupe takes its design inspiration from the BMW 02 with its individual headlights and compact dimensions.  Don’t get me wrong here, at 4,537mm long, 1,838mm wide and 1,390mm tall, the new BMW 2 Series Coupe is much bigger than the BMW 02.

However, bear in mind that the new M3 has grown larger than ever before and is now tipping scales at 1.7 Tonnes. Compared to that, the new BMW 2 Series Coupe is a compact sports car.

Under the bonnet, you get three engine options. The range kick starts with the 220i, which uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 184hp and 300nm of torque, then there is a frugal 220d with 48V mild-hybrid system mated to a 2.0-litre diesel engine, combined, it produces 191hp and 400Nm of torque.

The most potent engine of the lot is the 3.0-litre inline-six turbocharged petrol engine that comes in the M240i xDrive. This engine in M240i xDrive produces 374hp and 500 Nm of torque and sends it to all four wheels.

BMW say they are planning to launch a 244hp variant of the 2 Series Coupe, but it will be launched sometime in 2022 only.

All variants of BMW 2 Series Coupe will come mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. However, the 240i xDrive will come with a sportier eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission

BMW says, their new 240i xDrive can reach 100kph from a standstill in just 4.3 seconds and onto an electronically controlled top speed of 250kph. The new BMW is also quite practical with a large 390-litre boot and can tow up to 1,600 kgs.

On the inside, it is a typical BMW with a very business-like interior and everything will familiar to a BMW driver. However, engineers at BMW has loaded the car with features like a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 10.25-inch touch screen infotainment display, gesture control, Over-The-Air updates, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The new BMW 2 Series Coupe can also be fitted with optional driver aids like Driving Assistant with Lane Change Warning, Rear Collision Prevention and rear crossing traffic warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function including manual Speed Limit Assist, Park Distance Control, Reversing Assistant, reverse camera, 360-degree surround view and Remote 3D view camera, and a Head-Up Display.

Thoughts

If you have thought the new BMW M3s and M4s have become too big and powerful, I think you should get one of these for yourself.
