Toyota launched two limited-edition models based on the legendry Land Cruiser 70 series.

Toyota has recently introduced the latest iteration Land Cruiser, the Land Cruiser LC300. Packed with all the latest technology, the Land Cruiser LC300 is one of the most capable and comfortable 4x4’s out there, but if you are a fan of old-school 4x4s and live in UAE, you are in luck. Toyota has launched two limited-edition variants based on Toyota’s legendry Land Cruiser 70 Series hardtop (HT) and double cab (DC) models dubbed ‘Overlander’.

Both the limited edition models come with a 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The tried-and-tested, naturally aspirated V6 engine puts out 228hp and 370Nm of torque – a mediocre number by today’s standards, but this is one of those vehicles that goes beyond the specification sheet.

Despite the platform being almost 37 years ago, Toyota has made the best use of their ‘Kaizen method of development, where continuous minor improvements have made this model unrecognisable. For this limited-edition models, Toyota has made further improvements to make it stand out.

However, most of these modifications are locally sourced, which includes the front and rear TJM XGS “Series 4000 SX” shocks, and TJM XGS coil springs at the front; As a result of these modifications, the limited-edition Overlander models ride a little taller than the standard model. 

Other modification includes heavy-duty wheels, BF Goodrich KO2 tyres, heavy-duty air compressor, 12v electric winch, a pair of STEDI 7-inch LED spotlights, matte black side step, and few ‘Overlander’ badges. They are even equipped with front and rear differential locks for hard-core off-roading. The limited-edition, Overlander models are also equipped with front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, a 9-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to please modern classic-car lovers.

                                

In terms of Safety, the vehicle comes equipped with all the necessary safety features like the ESP, ABS, EBD, traction control, two airbags etc., It even comes with brake assist and hill assist function that will be helpful for most buyers.

Thoughts

Priced at Dhs 190,000 and Dhs 195,00 for the DC and HT models respectively, you have to be a genuine fan of the Land Cruiser 70 series. However, these type of vehicles are fast vanishing due to stricter safety and emission regulations, who knows this might be the last of the ‘old-school’ 4x4s one can buy afresh.
