Toyota GR86-Still a Subaru BRZ with Toyota badge?

Toyota has rebadged their compact sportscar, 86 as GR 86 for 2022 along with a whole list of upgrades to justify the ‘GR’ moniker. The ‘GR’ stands for Gazoo Racing, which happens to be the motorsport brand of Toyota.

Last year, Subaru had unveiled their 2022 model BRZ with a host of upgrades. Unfortunately for the fans, they were still left with the dreams of a more potent turbocharged engine.

The new Toyota GR86 comes with almost identical upgrades compared to its sister-model, the Subaru BRZ. However, Toyota has given GR86 it's own unique styling with more aggressive front bumpers and grille design.

The new 2022 Toyota GR86 is powered by a 2.4-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The peak power is rated at 223hp, which is 23hp more than the model it replaces. The torque has also increased quite substantially at 250Nm, 45Nm increase in torque compared to the previous model’s 205Nm.

Despite the larger engine, the low kerb weight of 1270 kgs was achieved by using Aluminium for the roof and fenders. Toyota claims that their 2022 GR86 has become more driver-focussed due to a 50% increase in torsional rigidity.

What we think.

The new Toyota GR86 is not radically different from its sister model, theSubaru BRZ. However, we suspect that the decision not to offer a more powerful turbocharged model might be due to the existence of a 2.0-litre Toyota Supra.
