Mercedes unveils their compact electric SUV, the Mercedes-Benz EQB.
Mercedes-Benz has revealed the Mercedes-Benz EQB and it is a glacier-friendly all-electric SUV. Its announcement comes just days after the launch of the brand’s flagship electric sedan, the Mercedes-Benz EQS.
The new
Mercedes-Benz EQB will take-on Audi Q4 E-tron when it goes on sale in the UK.
It has been confirmed that the Mercedes will launch the top-of-the-line EQB 350
4Matic first in the UK, followed by lesser expensive models like EQB 300 4Matic
and EQB 250 in 2022.
Unlike the new Mercedes EQS, which is built on a bespoke electric platform, the EQB shares its platform with its fossil fuel powered cousin, the Mercedes GLB. However, Mercedes has added a few unique touches to differentiate the EQB from GLB.
The unique bits
include a completely closed gloss-black grille, new bumpers, a new light bar
that connect the two headlights, unique graphics for digital instruments, new
upholstery, and rose gold effect on the aluminium bits surrounding the air-con
vents.
The EQB 350 4Matic is powered by two electric motors, one at each axle. The electric motors in question are asynchronous and synchronous motors, mounted over the front and rear axles respectively.
The maximum
combined output of Mercedes EQB 350 4Matic is rated at 288bhp. Mercedes claims
that the EQB 350 4Matic can charge its battery at a maximum rate of 100 kW on a
DC set-up and 11 kW on an AC set-up.
Even though the official figures are not yet out, trusted Mercedes officials have told a British automotive magazine that the new EQB 350 4matic can hit 100kmph from a standstill in just 6.0 seconds. They also claim that the maximum range is about 260 miles, while the average energy consumption is rated at 3.2mpkWh.
The lesser
variants like EQB 300 4Matic utilises a similar set-up to the EQB 350 4Matic
but 47bhp less power at 241bhp. While the base variant, EQB 250 is the least
powerful of the lot, using just a 188hp electric motor under the hood and
driving the front wheels.
At 495-litres,
the boot is still large enough for most buyers but can be expanded to
1710-litres by folding the rear seats.
