Mercedes-Benz EQS revealed.

Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed their Flagship EV, the Mercedes-Benz EQS. It is Mercedes's answer to Tesla’s Model S.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS is the first vehicle from Mercedes-Benz to use their bespoke electric vehicle platform called EVA (Electric Vehicle Architecture). This new bespoke platform will also lay the foundations for future EVs from Mercedes-Benz.

The new Mercedes-Benz EQS will be manufactured alongside their flagship luxury sedan, the S-Class in Sindelfingen, Germany.

The two angular headlights look more sport than regal and are connected by a thin strip of the lighting element. The taillights are also sporty in styling and can be further stylised with an optional three-dimensional star pattern.

The cab-forward design with liftback-style boot from the EQS vision concept has also been carried over, which is quite uncharacteristic of luxury sedans; Especially, when you consider that the EQS in question is S-Class’s electric equivalent.

Unlike few electric cars, there is no boot under the clamshell bonnet and the bonnet can only be opened during services. Cleverly, Mercedes-Benz has added a separate tray on the front left-hand side that swivels its way out to add washer fluid to clean the windscreen. How German is that, huh?

Coming on to the sides, the doors have very premium-looking door handles that stay flush with the bodywork and pop out only when necessary. The premium feel doubles when you open the door and notice the absence of frame around the windows.

The new EQS measures 5,216mm long and 1,512mm tall. However, it doesn’t look its size in pictures, thanks to the combination of long wheelbase and large alloys wheels that are 22-inch in diameter (The standard size starts at 19-inch).

It is startling when you consider drag coefficient is just 0.20 given the EQS's large exterior dimensions, and the turning circle will also be remarkably short due to rear-wheel steering system that can turn the rear-wheels up to 10-degrees in opposite direction to front wheels. However, the standard rear-wheel steering can only rotate the rear-wheels up to 4.5-degrees.

The new EQS is also packed with clever features, one of which will detect the driver and open the door without even touching the handle. After the driver climbs in and presses his foot on the brake, the door will automatically close itself. Proper luxury.

That’s not all, the moment you are on inside you will see a trio of large screens which is unlike any other cars in the market. The three screens are integrated neatly into a single-piece of curved glass that runs across the dashboard.

There is also a tall centre console with two separate storages, each carrying its own set of USB ports and wireless charging pads.

The liftback-styled boot may not have helped EQS in the looks department but has 60 more litres of storage space than the S-Class sedan, which only has 550-litres. The storage space can further be extended to 1,779-litres by flat-folding the rear seats.

Under the floor is a 108kWh battery for both the EQS 450 and EQS 580 variants. The EQS 450 variant houses a single asynchronous motor capable of sending 334hp and 458Nm of torque to the rear wheels, equating to 0-100kph of 6.2seconds despite weighing 2480kgs.

Whereas the more potent EQS 580 model can sprint from 0-100kph in just 4.3seconds, courtesy of 523hp and 856Nm of torque. The EQS 580 is also heavier than the EQS 450 by almost 105kgs, thanks to two electric motors placed on each axle. The claimed range for EQS is rated at 770km under the WLTP test cycle and both variants are limited to a top speed of 210kph.

There is also talks about an AMG variant using the same powertrain as EQC 580 but with power output of 700hp and beyond.

The new EQS will arrive in UAE very soon and we believe it might be priced slightly above the S-Class sedan.
